Health topics are amongst the top five story topics in the media, along with crime, weather, accidents and disasters, and human interest stories. We are all concerned about staying well and about what might be wrong with us when we are not sparking on all fours.

A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Center for Media and Public Affairs in the United States found that when local television covered health issues, it focussed most (60 percent) of its health stories on the causes and treatments for diseases. Of these, the diseases attracting the heaviest coverage were food-borne illnesses (15 percent ) and cancer (12 percent).

The second most common subjects were environmental/lifestyle health issues, such as diet and exercise (21 percent), while stories about the healthcare industry and health insurance ranked a distant third.

In Australia at present the ranking for the healthcare industry would be much higher, as the fallout continues after the announcement of provisional liquidation for one of the nation's largest medical indemnity organisations, United Medical Protection. — Marilyn
