Introduction

The Toowong-Indooroopilly Community-Police Consultative Council was formed in 1996 and as such is one of the earliest examples of these Councils. Due to an enthusiastic committee and broad community support, the Council has undertaken a number of major projects including the following to emphasise the capacity of the community to assist in building "co-operation between police and community" :-

A Police and Community Festival at Graceville to promote Crime Prevention Week (25.8.96) Three major community safety audits (St Lucia in November 1997, Indooroopilly in 1998 and Toowong in 1999) Annual school competitions and displays at major regional shopping centres.

In 1996/7 with Rotary as our sponsor, this Council made a successful application to the Gaming Machine Community Benefit Fund for funding for a Police Mobile Activity Centre, receiving a grant for $36600 to build and equip an MAC.

Our Council has maintained representation on the State Committee for Crime Prevention Week since its inception and the decision to hold an annual Crime Prevention Week following the success of the Police and Community Festival.

Our Council also played a significant role in the establishment of the Police Beat Shop at Indooroopilly Shoppingtown despite the new police station being directly across Moggill Road.

The Council remains one of the strongest in Queensland and as such, is again considering what leadership role it might take in furthering the roles of the Community-Police Consultative Councils. This discussion paper reviews the roles of the Councils, addresses some concerns and then considers some projects that appear relevant to the next 5 years, not only of this Council but the development of increased support for the Councils throughout Queensland.
