Report on Public Meeting to protest St Lucia Golf course fence, 4 Oct 2003
Yesterday about 80 residents held a PUBLIC MEETING on the golf course to discuss the current situation. There was a strong feeling against the fence and in favour of maintaining the level of access and recreational use that have been enjoyed by residents in this park since 1926. The meeting heard from a legal expert that the issue of Council liability for injuries on the course would not be helped by a fence. It was agreed that signage and marking the boundary with bollards would be more effective and reasonable.
The following ACTION POINTS were discussed:
1.
Residents will express their concerns about the proposed fence by responding the Council's 'FLYER'. A copy is attached for those who need one. Deadline for response is next Friday, 10 October. Councillor Prentice will investigate why the Council's leaflet has been poorly distributed.
2.
All concerned residents will consider putting NO Golf Course FENCE PLACARDS on their street front wall or gate. They will also be replaced on the ugly fence posts - until the posts are removed.
3.
A new PETITION will be circulated in the neighbourhood and signatures obtained will be sent to the Council. A copy of the Petition Form is attached. A number of individuals offered to take the Petition round particular streets. ANDREW or GEORGE - please circulate the list of Volunteers and Streets. If your street is not covered, please take the Petition round your area and obtain signatures. We are aiming to get all signatures to Councillor Prentice's office in Indooroopilly Shopping Town by next Friday, 10 October. She will photocopy them all and send them off to the Council. The Petition will coincide with the forthcoming Council sitting.
The Petition to the Council says:
NO FENCE: We do not want any fence restricting access to the golf course area or detracting from the park landscape.
CONFIRM ACCESS: We want the Council to confirm our right to use the golf course area for recreation and enjoyment, rather than trying to reduce or deny our access.
IMPROVE PARK MANAGEMENT: We want to see better management of the natural values of the area. We are willing to work with the Council to implement such improvements."
