Indooroopilly—

Indooroopilly means 'running water' or 'gully of running water' of 'place of leeches ' depending on the particular group of Aboriginal people using the area.

Silver, lead and zinc were mined at Finney's Hill where the University Mine is today.

Fig Tree Pocket was actually named after a large Fig Tree. There was a bora ring in Fig Tree Pocket area.

Up until the 1960s there were clean sandy beaches at points along the Brisbane River. Under the Indooroopilly Bridge was a popular site for picnics and swimming.

Indooroopillly has had several European names - St Lucia, Witton, Boyland's Pocket - before it was named Indooroopilly in 1875.

The first European born in the western area of Brisbane is recorded as being Caesar Breddin.

Mooredale is named after the Moore family who had a dairy farm in the area.

The Indooroopilly, Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket and Long Pocket areas were primarily agricultural and dairying districts up to the turn of the century. Most of what is now Indooroopilly was once owned by the Stamms and comprised the Stamm Estate.




The IDHS was formed at the end of 2001 to promote an interest in the history of Indooroopilly and nearby districts.

The areas of historical interest to the Society cover Indooroopilly, Fig Tree Pocket, Chapel Hill, Moore Park, Long Pocket.

    The Speaker for the November Meeting will be Professor Colin O'Connor who will be speaking on the history of the Indooroopilly Bridge.
    Professor O'Connor is author of numerous publications on bridges with his book 'Spanning Two Centuries - Historic Bridges of Australia', a book of special interest to historians. Visitors are welcome.
