JOHNSON & PAT RAFTER TOGETHER TO LAUNCH AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP DAY 2002

Michael Johnson MP, Federal Member for Ryan, attended the launch of Australian Citizenship Day, to be held on September 17, with Australian of the Year, Pat Rafter and Young Australian of the Year, Scott Hocknull, Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave, at the Ithaca RSL, Brisbane, on the weekend.

The launch marks the beginning of an advertising campaign to encourage residents to take up Australian citizenship and for Australian citizens to take part in Affirmation Ceremonies where they can publicly affirm their loyalty to Australia.

"I recently hosted the Ryan community's first local citizenship ceremony at the Jindalee Boat Ramp and was delighted to see the number of people getting involved in the Affirmation Ceremony," Mr Johnson said.

"It's a great opportunity for those who are passionate about their citizenship, to say so publicly and formally."

"It's both an important privilege and responsibility to take up Australian Citizenship. It is fantastic to see people like Pat Rafter getting involved in such an important campaign."

To find out more about Australian citizenship, people can ring the Citizenship Information Line on 131 880 or visit the Australian Citizenship Website

"I hope we always remain a nation of individuals with different backgrounds, holding different views, and from different cultures- all united in our pride at being Australian and all working together for Australia's future," Mr Johnson said.
