JOHNSON HOSTS AUSTRALIA'S
LEADING STEM CELL RESEARCHER, ALAN TROUNSON
AT RYAN COMMUNITY FORUM
Michael Johnson MP, Federal Member for Ryan, today held the electorate's inaugural Ryan Community Forum on the issue of stem cell research with special guest speaker, Professor Alan Trounson BSc (hons), MSc, PhD, Australia's leading researcher in this field.
"I would like to thank the many Ryan residents who attended the first forum. It was an excellent opportunity for local residents to express their concerns regarding embryonic stem cell research and I am pleased to say there was some constructive debate on the matter," Mr Johnson said.
The Ryan Community Forum on stem cell research was held at the Peter Doherty Lecture Theatre, Indooroopilly State High School at 11:00am on Tuesday, 13th August.
"I plan to host regular Ryan Community Forums so that our local community is able to get together, ask questions and get informed on the issues that effect them."
"Many people contacted my office, both for and against any decision by the Government to allow stem cell research in Australia. This is a very topical issue and it's important that Ryan residents have the opportunity to ask questions and have their say on the issue."
Professor Alan Trounson is the Director of the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development and was a pioneer of in vitro infertility treatments. Mr Trounson has published over 300 research papers throughout a long and distinguished career in the embryology and stem cell field. More recently, he has led a team of scientists who are pioneering the human embryonic stem cell field.
"This is the first time that Professor Trounson has attended an electorate wide community forum. He flew in from Melbourne especially for the forum," Mr Johnson said.
