Johnson launches new program
to boost participation in hockey
A new program to increase the number of people playing hockey in Australia was launched today by Mr Michael Johnson MP, the Federal Member for Ryan, representing the Minister for the Arts and Sport Senator Rod Kemp.
Take It On! is a joint initiative between the Australian Sports Commission, Hockey Australia and corporate partner Just Hockey and is part of the Federal Government’s Targeted Sports Participation Growth Program.
Mr Johnson, said Take It On! will encourage more young people to play hockey and help reduce the number of people dropping out of the sport.
‘By offering a program designed to introduce new players and encourage past players back to hockey, the Take It On! community program will help boost Hockey in Australia,’ Mr Johnson said.
‘Through the junior component of Take It On!, entry level participants will be introduced to hockey in a fun, friendly environment and learn the skills needed to enjoy participation in regular competitions.’
The Federal Government, through the Australian Sports Commission, is providing $390,000 over the next three years to the program. Just Hockey, one of the world's leading specialist hockey retailers, will provide a range of equipment for the expected 30,000 increase in players over that period.
Among the guests at today’s launch at Canberra’s Lyneham Hockey Centre was Sydney Olympic hockey gold medallist Angie Skirving. Skirving, who first played for Australia as a 17-year-old in 1998, says hockey opened up many opportunities for her.
‘I began playing hockey when I was 12 because I didn’t have a sport to play at school; seven years later I was winning a gold medal at the Olympics,’ Skirving said.
