LOCAL TEACHER TRAVELLING TO GALLIPOLI
Local teacher, Jo-Anne Cameron of The Gap State High School has been chosen as one of two teacher chaperones accompanying winners of the 2003 Simpson Prize travelling to Gallipoli in April to attend the dawn service and other ANZAC Day activities.
Ms Cameron was presented with a special Certificate by Federal Member for Ryan, Mr Michael Johnson MP, at a local ceremony last week.
"It's great that Joanne has this very special opportunity to travel to Gallipoli with the winners of the Simpson Prize," Mr Johnson said.
Ms Cameron will leave for Gallipoli on 18 April and return on 28 April 2003.
The Simpson Prize is an essay competition for Year 9 and 10 students across Australia. Students entering the competition write about the ANZAC spirit, how it was born in Gallipoli in 1915 and how and why Australians have commemorated it.
Now in its fourth year, the competition honours John Simpson Kirkpatrick 'the man with the donkey', whose compassionate bravery in rescuing soldiers under fierce fire at Gallipoli personifies this spirit.
The Commonwealth has provided $169,000 in funding, which includes sending winning students (one from each State and Territory) and two accompanying teachers to Gallipoli.
"Nearly 2,000 entries were received for the competition, showing young Australian have a strong appreciation of the ANZAC spirit and how it continues to influence Australian life. I would like to warmly congratulate all winners and runners up," Mr Johnson said.
