Ryan resident wins a
2003 Young Rural Science Award
Federal Member for Ryan, Michael Johnson MP, has congratulated local Ryan resident, Carolyn Kerr from St Lucia, on being among eighteen winners of this year's 2003 Science & Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
"I would like to congratulate Carolyn on her innovative research. It is this type of project that boosts the competitiveness of Australia's rural industries and long-term viability of our regional communities," Mr Johnson said.
"The awards recognise fantastic young Australians like Carolyn with the skills, the vision and the determination to make a difference to regional and rural communities."
Local Ryan resident, Carolyn Kerr was a sponsored winner for her project; Australian Wool Innovation -Does stress affect livestock growth? Caroline is hoping to produce a diagram illustrating how stress, growth and the immune system interact and affect an animal's developmental pathway. The findings could lead to further research into strategies farmers could employ to avoid stress in animals and boost growth.
The awards, now in their third year, have proven very popular among young people working in Australia's science and agriculture sectors. Each of the award winners will each receive up to $8,000 to undertake year-long projects that will benefit their industries.
Eligible people are urged to consider applying next year. To qualify, applicants must be aged between 18 and 35, and provide an outline of a scientific or research-based project that can be completed within 12 months.
