Howard Government acts to ban spam

Australia has taken a major leap forward in dealing with the growing problem of unsolicited spam e-mails with the introduction of the Spam Bill 2003, Mr Michael Johnson, Federal Member for Ryan said today.

"I have been contacted by a number of Ryan residents who are sick and tired of the mountain of junk that they receive in the e-mail in boxes, especially when a fair majority of it is pornography," Mr Johnson said.

"These concerns have been recognised with this new legislation which will see tough penalties of up to $1.1 million per day apply. This type of penalty will make spammers rethink their decision to bombard consumers with unwanted e-mail," Mr Johnson said.

The legislation balances the need to make spamming an unprofitable venture while protecting legitimate business practices online.

The legislation links in with other strands of a multi-layered strategy being pursued by Government in the form of education and awareness raising programs, the promotion of anti-spam filters, industry codes, and international cooperation.

HOWARD GOVERNMENT BLACK SPOT PROGAMME- SAVING LIVES IN RYAN

Michael Johnson MP, Federal Member for Ryan, welcomed $70,000 in federal funding to fix a dangerous intersection in Indooroopilly as a part of the Federal Government's ongoing National Black Spot Programme.

The local Black Spot project will see the upgrade of traffic signals at the intersection of Coonan Street and Allwood Avenue in Indooroopilly.

"This funding is all about saving lives by fixing dangerous locations on our local roads. We can't be complacent when it comes to reducing the toll," Mr Johnson said.

Mr Johnson acknowledged the co-operative effort between Federal, state and local governments, in partnership with the local community, to reduce the national road toll.

"The Black Spot Programme, now in its seventh year, has been very successful. It has been reported to have prevented at least 32 fatalities and more than 1500 serious injuries during its first three years," Mr Johnson said.

In response to the Programme evaluation and in line with the National Road Safety Action Plan, the Government has extended the National Black Spot Programme at a cost of $180 million over four years.

National Black Spot Programme information is available on line .
