MINISTER OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES JOHNSON'S RYAN ENVIRONMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

An innovative and successful nature refuge project undertaken by Green Corp participants in Ryan was today recognised by the Federal Minister for Environment and Heritage, the Hon Dr David Kemp.

Federal Member for Ryan, Michael Johnson and the Minister attended the graduation of the 10 Green Corps who participated in the Morton Nature Search and Nature Refuge project. The project was recognised as an excellent model for community groups to use in efforts to revive local flora and fauna.

"The team of local young people, aged between 17 and 20 years, have been working on the Morton Nature Search and Nature Refuge project over the past six months," Mr Johnson said.

"The quality of their work has been outstanding and all graduates should be applauded for their efforts to conserve and restore the local area's natural environment and cultural heritage.

"Not only are graduates undertaking valuable projects that help the local environment, they are also gaining practical experience. The graduates have developed skills in fauna surveying, seed collection, tree propagation and planting, weed management, and track construction," Mr Johnson said.

All ten Green Corps Graduates have achieved a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management, received training in senior First Aid, Occupational Health and Safety and Career Counselling, and successfully completed elective units including native plant identification, propagation and management and track construction. A number plan to resume University, while others have applied for traineeships.

Work undertaken on nature refuges will be maintained by private landholders with support from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and a regular landholder newsletter will ensure the local community is encouraged to be involved in the reserve's long-term management.

Young people interested in participating in the Green Corps are encouraged to contact the National Green Corps Hotline number on 1800 077 700 or visit the Green Corps web site at: www.greencorps.com.au

Michael Johnson MP, Federal Member for Ryan, today welcomed the Minister for Environment & Heritage, the Hon Dr David Kemp, to the electorate where the Minister officially launched the Ryan Environment Advisory Committee.

The Minister attended the graduation ceremony of a local Green Corps Program as well as launching the Ryan Environmental Advisory Committee at Lone Pine Koala Santuary, during his visit to Ryan.

"I receive regular feedback from the community through the 'Make Your Point' surveys I distribute and one of the biggest issues of concern to residents is the environment - especially the importance of preserving our unique local environment," Mr Johnson said.

"The Ryan Environment Advisory Committee will provide an opportunity for local residents to identify key environmental concerns at a local and national level. This feedback will then be given directly to the Minister for Environment and Heritage, the Hon Dr David Kemp."

The Committee is comprised of eight members with a variety of different backgrounds ranging from secondary school students through to professional representatives of national environmental associations.

"I would like to thank the many people who nominated for this voluntary Advisory Committee. It was very hard to narrow it down to just eight members."

The eight members of the Committee include:
  • Rozanne Botha from Kenmore
  • Nicole Diatloff from Pullenvale
  • Margaret Forrest from Brookfield
  • Dr Malcolm Frost from Kenmore Hills
  • Jason Jones from St Lucia
  • Cameron McKean from Sinnamon Park
  • Georgina Rutherford from Bellbowrie
  • Deborah Tabart from Brookfield

  • "I look forward to working with this Committee over the coming year to identify local environmental concerns and raise awareness of them in the Ryan community," Mr Johnson said.
