RYAN COMPANY FUNDED TO FIGHT FAT
A local biotechnology company, which is taking up the frontline in the fight against obesity, has been awarded a grant of $234,700 through the Australian Government's Biotechnology Innovation Fund (BIF).
Federal Member for Ryan, Michael Johnson, today congratulated Adipogen Pty Ltd, based in the University of Queensland, on being one of two local Ryan companies awarded funding in the latest round of the BIF program.
Adipogen Pty Ltd will use the grant to further work on the development of a compound which will target fat cells in the body. Recent studies show that 47% of women and 63% of men are overweight or obese.
"There is some very exciting biotechnology research going on in our local community that has the potential to have a major impact on our future lifestyles and health," Mr Johnson said.
Since 2001 the Biotechnology Innovation Fund has supported 162 projects with grants worth more than $36.5 million. A full list of the Queensland recipients can be found at www.ausindustry.gov.au
