One of the best places in Australia to see crocodiles - in safety - is at Hartley's Creek, about half way between Cairns and Port Douglas, on the Captain Cook Highway.
After almost 70 years as one of Tropical North Queensland's most popular attractions, the newly-renamed Hartley's Crocodile Adventures has moved to a new site adjacent to its former home and has a great new look.
About $6 million has been spent on the redevelopment which includes a five acre lagoon - home to 23 estuarine crocodiles and about 140 bird species and surrounded by paperbark and bloodwood trees.
Two 36-seat boats, custom-made for croc viewing with tiered seating, run 25 minute cruises on the lagoon, and a series of timber boardwalks winds through the billabongs, woodland and rainforest providing safe elevated viewing of the crocs and other wildlife.
Daily activities include hand-feeding cassowaries, turtles, water birds and fish, and a new state-of-the-art amphitheatre is used for crocodile and snake shows.
Guided tours of the crocodile farm are also run, with crocodile leather goods from the far on sale in the gift shop. Hartley's also now has a small conference centre with a capacity for 80 delegates theatre-style, and a 200-seat restaurant on the deck overlooking the lagoon.
Admission is $24 adults, $12 children aged four to 14, or $60 for a family (two adults and their children). A three-day return pass is also available for same price. Call (07) 4055 3576 or www.crocodileadventures.com for more information.
