HOLDEN has recorded its best first-quarter sales ever and says
the Australian new vehicle market could be on the way to breaking
the all-time record of 808,000 for a year.
Holden had 14,719 sales in March, Toyota was second with 12,325,
followed by Ford (8673) and Mitsubishi (5642).
According to an analysis by Automotive e-News, March industry
volume of 67,824 new vehicles was a decrease of 1.6 per cent, or
1127 vehicles, on the same month last year, due primarily to the
impact of Easter, which fell in April last year.
The industry's best year on record was in 1998 when 807,669
new cars and commercial vehicles were sold. This year's
first-quarter result is already ahead of 1998 figures by more
than 9000 units.
When asked about the chances of a new record, Holden's
marketing chief rated it better than 50-50.
