Alas, poor
Yugo...
|
AN American internet poll asked motorists what was the worst car
they had owned or driven. Resoundingly, the answer was a piece of
rubbish from Eastern Europe called the Yugo.
Be thankful it didn't come here, juding by these comments
-
"I
once test drove a Yugo, during which the radio fell out, the gear
shift knob came off in my hand, and I saw daylight through the
strip around the windshield."
"The Yugo's first stop after the showroom was the
service department: 'Fill 'er up and replace the
engine!'"
"Any time we made a right hand turn, we all had to lean to
the right to prevent the driver's side rear tyre from
scraping against the wheel well."
"At least it had heated rear windows--so your hands would
stay warm while you pushed."
Many years ago, I attended the Australian launch of the
Russian-built Lada. It was an event staged in true Soviet
style.
It was held in winter in a low-rent holiday camp beside a lake
near Albury. At lunch, every table was occupied by two bottles of
frozen vodka and thick-set Russian hosts in heavy coats.
The Ladas seemed serviceable, but the quality truly was awful.
It was well known that each shipment from Russia was taken
straight to a Melbourne warehouse where the cars were virtually
rebuilt and repainted to get them in saleable
condition.
