OUR MAGNIFICENT PARKS

Our parkland is precious and we must be diligent in preserving and protecting it. We are fortunate to have some wonderful parks in this area.

ANZAC PARK was originally part of Toowong Cemetery and it then became a Rifle Range between 1877 and the end of World War 1. Trees were planted in memory of the men from Toowong who fought for their country

The park was to be the new Botanic Gardens but the proposal was scrapped the Western Freeway, built in the 1970's reduced its size.

Anzac Park is now a regional park popular for family gatherings. It has an innovative play area, fenced toddlers playground, a flying fox for older children and a dog off leash area.

OAKMAN PARK was once the Toowong Sports Ground and in 1883 there were 700 spectators gathered there to watch the penny farthing bike races. It is now home to Qld Junior AFL and houses the historic wheel that was used in Pattersons Sawmill from 1901 to 1942.

PERRIN PARK in Taringa has one of the most popular children's playgrounds and the only pedal power Monorail in the western suburbs. It is also one of the few parks with open space that is not allocated to a sports club or sports field. It houses Toowong Bowls Club and a dog off leash area.

JACK COOK PARK was originally Heroes Park. In 1984 the name was changed in honour of Jack Cook a long time Toowong identity and keen sportsman. It is home to the Toowong Harriers and the Little Athletics.

TOOWONG MEMORIAL PARK was officially opened in 1918 in honour of those who enlisted from the Town of Toowong during the Great War 1914-18. Today Western Districts Rugby Football Club is located there, together with Brisbane basketball, and the Scouts. The Soldiers' Memorial on top of the hill was dedicated in 1922 and another RSL memorial is located near the Memorial gates.

MOORLANDS PARK named after The Mayne family house which is adjacent to the park was originally a creek and later a mangrove lined drain. In the 1940's it was piped and filled, (to reduce the mosquito menace) and the park formed.

Residents driving along Milton Rd would probably have noticed the new playground equipment recently installed in MILTON PARK (opposite the former Tennis Centre). The Train themed equipment is already proving popular. The play area, close to busy Milton Rd, is entirely fenced.

Finally the beautiful MT COOT-THA BOTANIC GARDENS provide enjoyment and recreation for locals and tourists alike.

How fortunate we are to have these magnificent parks close by.
